It’s New Year’s Eve!! A time for reflection on the achievements and events of the year past, and a time to anticipate the adventures in the year ahead. Also it’s a time for the M&S meal deal and watching Jools Holland’s Hootenanny if, like me, you’re the wrong side of 30 and you have a baby to look after.
I met up with gorgeous Lou from Brighton Lace just before Christmas for one of our mentoring catch ups and she asked me to name three things that I feel grateful for in the past year:
i) I’ve been fortunate to be incredibly busy this year and I’ve met with so many wonderful women and have loved creating their bridal and bridesmaid dresses – I’m so grateful for the wonderful feedback I’ve received and to all the brides who have shared their beautiful photos with me. I absolutely LOVE looking through the Real Wedding gallery and it makes me feel so proud to have played a part in these gorgeous celebrations. All of the photos are full of love and happiness, and it’s heartwarming to see.
ii) A chance meeting with the delightful Victoria JK Lamburn at the Belle’s Wedding Fair at the Brighton Dome this spring led to the most incredible collaboration in PARIS. Take a peek at Vicky’s breathtakingly beautiful styled shoot here.
iii) Finally, I’m very grateful to my friends and family for their support this year. I’ve found balancing running a business with motherhood incredibly challenging and at times it has been completely exhausting. My friends and family have helped enormously by helping me care for baby Eva. Thank you for helping me through difficult times (parenting is SUCH HARD WORK) – you guys are the best!
Very much looking forward to monthly catch ups with Lou next year as we support each other achieve our business goals, inspired by The Design Trust’s ‘Dream Plan Do’!
2016 has been fantastic for This Modern Love, here’s a few of my highlights:
Finalist at the UK Wedding Awards, named the ‘One To Watch’ by Perfect Wedding Magazine, featured in Hochzeitswahn, Love Sussex Weddings, The Bohemian Bride, Love Our Wedding, The Southbound Bride, Title Sussex, and British VOGUE. Take a peek at the Press Page to see where This Modern Love has been featured!
I’ve collaborated with Steffi on this beautiful light filled boudoir shoot, with Nick Mundial on a fun woodlands shoot in Brighton and with Ira Gelormino at the beautiful Caroline Chapel Gardens Asylum in London.
I’ve designed and created over three hundred kimonos, bridesmaid dresses and bridal gowns this year – it has been crazy busy! Here’s a little snap of my wall planner; I didn’t eat, sleep or breathe throughout May to August. Did I mention I’m exhausted?! I feel like I’ve been living in an underground bunker; I haven’t watched a TV series, seen a film, been to a gig or bought any music ALL YEAR. I’m going to make sure that next year is quieter, and make more time to relax!
2016 will be a memorable year because I have, at long last, bought my first home! Hoorah! It’s the flat of my dreams; a regency property on the seafront, with wooden floors, high ceilings and tonnes of character and charm (read: damp). It’s just along the coast from Brighton in the slightly less salubrious Worthing, which is a bit like Nuneaton-on-Sea. There is a Greggs and a Wilkos. I feel like I am home.

I’ve been busily designing a gorgeous new collection for 2017…
and I’ll be working on some Ready To Wear pieces for the Etsy store soon…
At the moment a couple of new designs are on a photoshoot in MILAN so I’m super excited to see the images…
I’m very much looking forward to working with 2017 brides to be! I’ve met with some gorgeous women who are marrying in the spring/summer and I’m delighted to be working with them to design and create their beautiful bridal gowns! Super excited about meeting all the brides to be at my new seaside studio space too! The studio is open once again and I’m now taking bookings, so remember to get in touch by emailing: email@example.com
Outside my happy little bubble of dressmaking, 2016 has been an eventful one – a world in turmoil; division and ‘post truth’ disbelief, loss of many loved people, war, conflict and tragedy. My heart breaks for the loss of life this year, and my thoughts are with those hurt and suffering. I would blithely say that *surely* 2017 will be better, but the truth is that we have some scary times ahead, and we all have to fight to maintain the accomplishments, the civil liberties and dignity that we have achieved – if we fail to do so, dangerous people will see that they are eroded. “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” [Edmund Burke] Let’s all be mindful of doing something next year in the fight against fascism, division and hatred.
Whether we ruminate over decisions past, or agitate about the future, it’s worth remembering the words of the great spiritualist author Ekhart Tolle; ‘All we have is this moment’.
Enjoy it, and cherish the ones you love.
Happy New Year!
